What is a double headstone?

A double headstone is a single memorial that honors two people — most often a husband and wife — with a name panel for each. It usually sits across a double plot or two adjacent plots. The terms double headstone, companion headstone and companion monument are used interchangeably.

• Two single headstones suit families who want different designs, or plots that are not side by side.

What should a husband and wife headstone say?

Most companion memorials carry each full name and dates on its own panel, a shared family name across the top, and one shared line in the center — a marriage date, “Together Forever,” a scripture verse or a line from a song that mattered to the couple. How is the second date added later?

When one partner is living, the memorial is produced with that partner’s death date left blank (sometimes the birth year is engraved in advance). The final date is engraved later, usually at the cemetery. Ask for that later engraving to be described in your written quote so the family knows what to expect.

How big is a double headstone?

A companion memorial is wider than a single headstone so that both panels read clearly, and the base must fit the width of a double plot. Exact limits are set by each cemetery and can differ between sections, so share the cemetery name before choosing a design and we will check the design against its written rules.
