What does an angel on a headstone mean?

Angels have been carved on memorials for centuries as messengers between heaven and earth. On a grave they express the hope that a loved one is watched over and at peace. The pose of the angel carries its own meaning:

AngelTypical poseWhat it expresses
Guardian angelStanding or kneeling with open or sheltering wings.Protection and guidance; a common choice for a child, parent or grandparent.
Mourning angelHead bowed, sometimes resting on the stone.Grief, love and remembrance by those left behind.
Praying angelHands folded in prayer.Faith, devotion and eternal peace.
Angel with a crossBeside or embracing a cross.Christian faith and the promise of resurrection.

Which angel headstone designs are available?

The 2026 catalog lists 5 angel designs (starting prices in USD):

Each design is offered in 9 granite colors. See the full angel headstone collection, and our granite color guide to see how carving reads on light and dark stone.

Carved angel or engraved angel?

A sculpted (relief) angel is carved into the granite so the figure stands out in three dimensions; it has the strongest presence and is the most labor-intensive. An engraved or etched angel is cut or laser-etched into a polished face, which suits flat and slant markers. Gray and lighter granites show carved detail through light and shadow; dark, even granite gives the sharpest contrast for etched artwork. Our engraving guide explains each method.

Can an angel headstone honor a couple?

Yes. A companion design such as the praying-angels headstone above places two name panels beneath the angels. Leave the surviving spouse’s date blank for later engraving, and confirm the cemetery allows one wide memorial on a double plot. Our double headstones guide covers companion layouts.

Will my cemetery allow an angel headstone?

Most angel designs are upright memorials, so first confirm that the section allows uprights rather than only flush markers. Also check the maximum height and width, foundation requirements and who may install. The cemetery has final approval — use our cemetery rules checklist and get answers in writing.

What does an angel headstone cost?

Angel designs start from $11,998.80 to $26,664.00 in our 2026 catalog; size, granite color, carving and options change the final price. Taxes, cemetery and permit fees, foundation and installation are quoted separately — installation is arranged through Monument Service Group or another qualified provider. Complimentary delivery may apply to eligible orders within the 48 contiguous states; Alaska and Hawaii are quoted separately. See the 2026 price guide and current offers.
